Product Overview

The 150x170mm Nano IR Soft Graduated Neutral Density filter from Nisi is specially designed for landscape photographers. This filter is made from high quality optical glass (not rasin) with nano coating to prevent losing any single bit of detail. The filter is designed with dark area on the top and gradually to clear at the bottom preventing over exposure of skies. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and the 0.6 density provides a 2 stop reduction in light from entering the lens. This filter measures 3.9 x 5.9″ / 100 x 150mm and is compatible with the Nisi 100mm filter holder or other 100mm Standard Filter Holder (Lee, Cokin or Formatt Hitech). The filter can be repositioned in the holder allowing recompose the photo for the best result.

FAQs

How does the soft graduated design of this filter benefit landscape photography?

The soft graduated design of the NiSi 150x170mm Nano IR Soft Graduated Neutral Density Filter allows for a smooth transition between the dark and clear areas of the filter. This feature is particularly beneficial in landscape photography as it helps to balance exposure between the bright sky and darker foreground elements. By gradually reducing the light entering the lens, photographers can avoid harsh lines and achieve a more natural look in their images.

What is the significance of the infrared protection coating on this filter?

The infrared protection coating on the NiSi filter is essential for preventing unwanted colour casts, particularly the red tint that can occur when shooting with a neutral density filter at smaller apertures. This coating ensures that the filter effectively blocks infrared light while allowing visible light to pass through, resulting in images that maintain true-to-life colours and details, especially in scenes with varying light conditions.

Can this filter be used with other filter holder systems aside from NiSi?

Yes, the NiSi 150x170mm filter is compatible with other 100mm standard filter holder systems such as those from Lee, Cokin, and Formatt Hitech. This versatility allows photographers to integrate the filter into their existing setups without the need for a dedicated holder, providing flexibility for those who already own different brands of filter holders.

What should I consider when positioning the filter in the holder for optimal results?

When positioning the NiSi filter in the holder, consider the horizon line of your composition. Align the graduated section of the filter with the area of the scene that is brighter, typically the sky, to ensure a smooth transition to the clearer part of the filter. You can reposition the filter within the holder to adjust for your composition, which is particularly useful for landscapes where the horizon may not be perfectly level.

How does the optical glass material enhance the performance of this filter?

The use of high-quality optical glass in the NiSi filter significantly enhances its performance compared to resin filters. Optical glass offers superior clarity and durability, reducing the likelihood of scratches and distortions that can affect image quality. This material ensures that detail is preserved throughout the image, allowing for crisp and clear photographs, even in challenging lighting conditions.

What types of photography besides landscapes can benefit from using this filter?

In addition to landscape photography, the NiSi 150x170mm Nano IR Soft Graduated Neutral Density Filter can be beneficial for various types of photography, including seascapes, cityscapes, and any situation where there is a significant contrast between the sky and the ground. It can also be used for long exposure photography to create a dramatic effect by allowing for slower shutter speeds while maintaining proper exposure levels.

Is this filter suitable for use in low light conditions?

While the NiSi graduated neutral density filter is primarily designed for balancing exposure in bright conditions, it can also be used in low light situations to achieve specific creative effects. For instance, it can be helpful in twilight scenarios to retain detail in the sky while exposing for a darker foreground. However, it is essential to consider the overall exposure of your scene and adjust your camera settings accordingly to achieve the desired results.
