Product Overview

Zeiss 12mm f2.8 Touit for Sony E-Mount

Affording an especially broad, 18mm equivalent field of view, the Sony E-mount Touit 12mm f/2.8 from ZEISS is a prime wide-angle lens well-suited for landscape, architecture, and interior shooting. A sophisticated Distagon optical design includes two aspherical elements and three low dispersion elements, which help to control a variety of aberrations, distortion, and colour fringing in order to produce sharp, well-corrected imagery. A floating elements system is used, too, to maintain consistent image quality throughout the focusing range. Individual elements also receive a ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and colour accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions. Additionally, suiting both photo and video use, this lens incorporates a DC autofocus motor to deliver especially fast, quiet, and precise focusing performance.

Key Features

FAQs

What types of photography is the Zeiss 12mm f/2.8 Touit lens best suited for?

The Zeiss 12mm f/2.8 Touit lens is particularly well-suited for landscape, architecture, and interior photography. Its wide-angle perspective allows for expansive compositions, making it ideal for capturing sweeping vistas and intricate architectural details. Additionally, the lens's bright f/2.8 maximum aperture enhances its performance in low-light conditions, making it a great choice for astrophotography and night scenes.

How does the optical design of the lens affect image quality?

The lens features a sophisticated Distagon optical design which includes two aspherical elements and three low dispersion elements. This design effectively controls various optical aberrations, such as distortion and chromatic fringing, resulting in sharp and well-corrected images. The use of the ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating further enhances image quality by minimising flare and ghosting, leading to improved contrast and colour accuracy, particularly in challenging lighting conditions.

What benefits does the floating elements system provide?

The floating elements system in the Zeiss 12mm f/2.8 Touit lens ensures consistent image quality across the entire focusing range, from as close as 7.1 inches to infinity. This means that whether you are shooting close-up details or vast landscapes, the lens maintains sharpness and clarity throughout, providing photographers and videographers with reliable performance in diverse shooting scenarios.

Can this lens be used for video recording, and what features support this?

Yes, the Zeiss 12mm f/2.8 Touit lens is well-suited for video recording. Its DC autofocus motor delivers fast, quiet, and precise focusing performance, which is crucial for capturing smooth and professional-looking video. Additionally, the lens's optical design helps to reduce focus breathing, allowing for seamless transitions during focus changes, making it a versatile tool for videographers.

How does the autofocus performance of this lens compare to other lenses in its category?

The DC autofocus motor in the Zeiss 12mm f/2.8 Touit lens is designed to provide quick and quiet focusing, which is often superior to many standard autofocus mechanisms found in other lenses. This feature makes it especially effective in both still photography and video applications, where noise levels are critical. Users can expect responsive performance that complements the fast-paced shooting environments typical of landscape and architectural photography.

Is this lens suitable for use with full-frame Sony cameras?

While the Zeiss 12mm f/2.8 Touit lens is specifically designed for APS-C-format Sony E-mount cameras, it can be used on full-frame Sony cameras as well. However, when mounted on full-frame bodies, the lens will produce an image circle that is cropped, resulting in an effective focal length of approximately 18mm. This is still advantageous for wide-angle compositions, but users should be aware that vignetting may occur at the edges of the frame.

What are some tips for using this lens for astrophotography?

When using the Zeiss 12mm f/2.8 Touit lens for astrophotography, consider shooting at its maximum aperture of f/2.8 to capture more light and improve star visibility. Use a sturdy tripod to minimise camera shake during long exposures, and try to find locations away from light pollution for clearer skies. Additionally, experiment with different exposure times and ISO settings to find the ideal balance for your specific shooting conditions.
