Canon RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens

Canon RF400mm f/2.8L IS USM

If you intend to shoot sports or wildlife with the Canon R3 and make the most of the 30fps burst, you're going to need lenses to match. Fortunately, while announcing the Canon R3, they also revealed two new ultra-telephoto primes. The Canon RF400mm f/2.8L IS USM, and the RF600mm f/4L IS USM significantly elevate the options available for Canon R mirrorless camera users.

Canon RF400mm f/2.8L IS USM Specs

  • 400mm Full Frame Focal Length
  • F2.8 Maximum Aperture
  • F32 Minimum Aperture
  • 17 Elements in 13 Groups
  • 9 Blade Aperture
  • 2.5m Minimum Focus Distance
  • 0.17 Maximum Magnification Ratio
  • 55mm Rear Drop-In Filter
  • Œ¶163 x 367mm Dimensions
  • 2.9kg Weight

The Canon RF400mm f/2.8L IS USM is ideal for those wanting to shoot fast-action sports. Thanks to the fast aperture and exceptional optical performance, subject separation and background blur are excellent. The lens is a beast and built for professional-level performance - but it is not for the faint-hearted. You will need to pack a tripod at 367mm long and almost 3kg, including the bucket-sized hood and tripod foot.

For optimal control, the Canon RF400mm f/2.8L IS USM is feature-packed with almost as many control functions as the Canon R3. It features a multi-mode image stabilisation selector, stabiliser on/off switch, manual focus speed selector, focus distance and focal range selector. As image stabilisation is critical with telephoto lenses, it is great to see that the Canon RF400mm f/2.8L IS USM delivers up to 5.5 stops.

Canon RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens

Optically identical to the super-telephoto EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM lens, the RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens from Canon delivers high-performance results and is a go-to choice for capturing professional-quality shots of sports, wildlife, and more. Designed exclusively for EOS R-series cameras, the lens features three modes of optical image stabilization with up to 5.5 stops of shake correction to deliver extremely sharp results whether hand-held or mounted on a monopod. A circular nine-blade aperture provides beautiful bokeh at smaller lens apertures, and Super Spectra and Air Sphere Coatings minimize ghosting and flare for exceptionally clear results when shooting in backlit situations. Additionally, Super UD and fluorite elements used in the optical design reduce colour fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and colour accuracy. Two focus presets allow you to instantly return to one or two memorized focus distances, and a customizable electronic focus ring allows manual focusing during SERVO AF. The RF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens is also compatible with Canon RF 1.4x and 2x Extenders, and the lens incorporates dust and water-resistant design with a fluorine coating on the front element for easy cleaning.
