Leveraging the power of a newly developed APS-C sensor, the Sony FX30 provides everyday content creators and aspiring filmmakers with a powerful, yet accessible cinema camera with which to push their cinematic journey to new heights. It blends an imaging pipeline designed for cinematic capture with a comprehensive feature set and intuitive operation to create a complete system for all levels of filmmaking.

26MP APS-C/Super 35 Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor

The FX30's advanced imaging system is on par with other options in Sony's Cinema Line-capturing detailed 10-bit UHD 4K imagery at up to 120 fps-giving it specs fitting a true cinema camera. The newly developed 26MP APS-C Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ XR processor are able to create high-quality 4K images with the Super 35 (16:9) area. This system is capable of capturing 14+ stops of dynamic range and benefits from Dual Base ISO architecture to improve low-light performance.

Firmware version 6.0.0 introduces a range of workflow improvements for the Sony FX30, making capture, monitoring, and recording more efficient for filmmakers and content creators. The new BIG6 home screen presents key shooting information such as frame rate, exposure index, shutter speed, iris, look settings, and white balance in a clear and accessible layout. A new Fixed/Variable frame rate mode allows direct frame rate selection without relying on S&Q mode, while Focus Magnifier and Auto Magnifier support have been added for manual focus use during Bright Monitoring. The update also expands De-Squeeze Display options with 1.5x and 1.6x magnification support and enables Blackmagic RAW recording output via HDMI to compatible external recorders.

Professional Recording and Picture Control

The FX30 delivers advanced cinema-level recording performance with support for 10-bit 4:2:2 capture in XAVC HS and XAVC S-I formats, along with high-quality UHD 4K recording created from a full 6K sensor readout. High frame rate options include 4K up to 120 fps and Full HD up to 240 fps for dramatic slow-motion footage. Dual Base ISO settings of 800 and 2500 help maximise image quality across different lighting conditions, while S-Log3 recording provides more than 14 stops of dynamic range. Filmmakers can also take advantage of Sony's professional picture controls, including S-Cinetone colour science, Picture Profiles such as S-Log3 and HLG, Creative Looks, and support for importing custom LUTs for accurate monitoring and consistent visual styling.

Advanced Autofocus and Stabilisation Features

Sony has equipped the FX30 with a sophisticated Fast Hybrid AF system featuring 495 autofocus points covering approximately 90% of the image sensor. This system delivers fast and accurate focusing performance, even when recording 4K video at up to 120 fps. Real-time Eye AF and Real-time Tracking help maintain sharp focus on human and animal subjects, while AF Assist enables seamless transitions between autofocus and manual focus control. Focus Map offers a visual representation of depth of field for easier focusing decisions during filming. A 5-axis in-body image stabilisation system supports smoother handheld shooting, while Active Mode combines optical and digital stabilisation for enhanced stability during movement.

Professional Design and Connectivity

Designed for solo operators and professional productions alike, the FX30 combines a lightweight and compact body with extensive customisation options and durable construction. Multiple threaded mounting points and a Multi Interface Shoe allow easy attachment of accessories without requiring an additional cage, while the integrated cooling fan supports uninterrupted recording during long sessions. Dual CFexpress Type A and SD card slots provide flexible media support for high-bitrate recording workflows. Connectivity options include full-size HDMI with 16-bit RAW output, USB-C for power and data transfer, microphone and headphone ports, and optional timecode synchronisation support. The camera also integrates with Sony's Catalyst Browse and Prepare software, enabling advanced post-production workflows using recorded metadata such as gyro data, LUT information, and camera rotation details.

Sony FE 16-25mm f/2.8 G Lens (Sony E)

A sleek and powerful wide-angle zoom designed for E-mount mirrorless cameras, the FE 16-25mm f/2.8 G Lens from Sony is an excellent on-the-go lens that specialises in landscape, travel, and close-up photography. By coupling a maximum f/2.8 aperture with an 11-bladed diaphragm, smooth and beautiful bokeh is naturally created. Additionally, this bright maximum aperture allows for high-quality captures even in dimly lit shooting scenarios. Not only is the FE 16-25mm f/2.8 dust and moisture-resistant, but it features a fluorine coating on the front lens element to repel fingerprints, water, and oil from accumulating. The de-clickable aperture ring is a massive benefit to video shooters to ensure smooth transitions.

Three Dedicated Control Rings

For making quick adjustments while shooting, three control rings are available: focus, zoom, and aperture. The aperture ring has the option of being set to click to provide tactile feedback when capturing photos, or it can be turned off in order to give you smooth, silent control while shooting video.
