Product Overview

Prized for its ability to isolate focus, the FE 135mm f/1.8 GM from Sony is a medium telephoto prime characterized by its bright and sophisticated design. The f/1.8 maximum aperture excels in low-light conditions and also offers increased control over the depth of field for working with selective focus techniques. The advanced optical design incorporates two extra-low dispersion elements, including one Super ED element, to reduce chromatic aberrations and one XA (extreme aspherical) element, which significantly controls spherical aberrations for a high degree of image sharpness and clarity. Additionally, a Nano AR coating has been applied to limit ghosting and lens flare for increased contrast and colour fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

FAQs

What types of photography are best suited for the Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM Lens?

The Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM Lens is particularly well-suited for portrait photography due to its ability to create a beautiful bokeh and isolate subjects from their backgrounds. Its medium telephoto focal length allows for flattering compression and detail in facial features, while the fast f/1.8 aperture excels in low-light scenarios, making it ideal for indoor or evening shoots. Additionally, this lens can be effectively used for event photography, wildlife, and even some types of sports photography where distance is needed.

How does the lens's optical design contribute to image quality?

The advanced optical design of the Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM Lens includes two extra-low dispersion elements, one Super ED element, and one XA element, which work together to significantly reduce chromatic aberrations and spherical distortions. This results in images with high resolution and sharpness across the frame. The Nano AR coating further enhances image quality by limiting ghosting and flare, especially in challenging lighting conditions, ensuring that colours remain vibrant and contrast is maintained.

Can this lens be used for video recording, and if so, what features support that?

Yes, the Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM Lens is suitable for video recording. It features a de-clickable physical aperture ring, allowing for smooth and silent aperture adjustments during shooting, which is crucial for maintaining continuity in video projects. The XD Linear Motor system also ensures quick and quiet autofocus performance, which is essential for capturing clean audio without distracting focus noises. Additionally, the lens's ability to produce beautiful bokeh enhances the cinematic quality of videos.

What are the advantages of the lens's dust- and moisture-sealed design?

The dust- and moisture-sealed design of the Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM Lens provides added durability and reliability when shooting in challenging weather conditions. This feature allows photographers to use the lens in environments where dust, rain, or humidity might pose a risk to less-protected equipment. It ensures that the internal components remain safe from the elements, enabling uninterrupted shooting experiences in various outdoor settings.

How does the lens perform at its maximum aperture of f/1.8?

At its maximum aperture of f/1.8, the Sony FE 135mm GM Lens excels in low-light conditions, allowing for faster shutter speeds and more creative control over depth of field. This wide aperture enables beautiful background blur, making subjects stand out sharply against a soft, aesthetically pleasing backdrop. Additionally, the lens maintains impressive sharpness and image quality even at this wide aperture, allowing for professional-quality results.

What benefits does the 11-blade circular diaphragm provide?

The 11-blade circular diaphragm of the Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM Lens contributes to the production of smooth, soft-edged bokeh, which enhances the quality of out-of-focus areas in your images. This is particularly important in portrait and selective focus photography, where the aesthetic quality of the background can significantly impact the overall composition. The rounded shape of the diaphragm helps to maintain a pleasing blur, creating a more visually appealing separation between the subject and background.
