Product Overview

Positioned as the workhorse lens for APS-C, the Sony E 16-55mm f/2.8 G is a flexible wide-angle to portrait-length zoom featuring a bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture. This fast design suits working in a variety of lighting conditions throughout the zoom range and also affords greater control over depth of field. Further distinguishing itself, this lens sports four aspherical elements and three extra-low dispersion elements in order to control spherical and chromatic aberrations for greater sharpness and clarity. A Nano AR Coating has also been applied to further reduce surface reflections and flare for improved contrast when working in bright and backlit conditions. Benefitting the optics, this lens also sports an XD Linear Motor system that is quick and quiet, and also lends more responsive control for manual focus operation. The lens also has a dust- and moisture-sealed design, along with a fluorine coating, to support shooting in inclement conditions.

The Sony E 16-55mm f/2.8 G Lens is highly versatile, making it ideal for various photography styles. Its wide-angle capability excels in landscape and architectural photography, while the zoom range is perfect for portraits and event photography. The bright f/2.8 aperture also allows for excellent performance in low-light situations, making this lens suitable for indoor events and night photography.

How does the build quality of the Sony E 16-55mm f/2.8 G Lens affect its usability in different environments?

The lens features a dust- and moisture-sealed design, which provides additional protection against the elements, allowing you to shoot confidently in inclement weather. The fluorine coating on the front element not only helps resist dust and moisture but also makes cleaning easier, ensuring that your lens remains in optimal condition even in challenging shooting environments.

What advantages does the Nano AR Coating provide for outdoor photography?

The Nano AR Coating significantly reduces surface reflections and flare, which is particularly beneficial when shooting in bright light or backlit conditions. This coating enhances contrast and colour rendering, ensuring that your images are sharp and vibrant, even when faced with harsh sunlight or reflective surfaces.

How does the XD Linear Motor system enhance autofocus performance?

The XD Linear Motor system provides quick and quiet autofocus, which is ideal for both photography and video applications. This system allows for responsive focusing, which is especially useful when capturing fast-moving subjects or when shooting in quiet environments. Yes, the Sony E 16-55mm f/2.8 G Lens is well-suited for video recording. Its constant f/2.8 aperture allows for consistent exposure while zooming, and the quick, silent autofocus provided by the XD Linear Motor ensures smooth focus transitions. The lens's ability to produce pleasing bokeh due to its rounded nine-blade diaphragm also enhances the cinematic quality of your video footage.

What are the benefits of having customizable focus hold buttons on the lens?

Customizable focus hold buttons on the lens barrel allow you to quickly access important settings without needing to navigate through your camera's menu. This feature is particularly beneficial during fast-paced shooting scenarios where you need immediate control over focus settings, enabling you to concentrate on composing your shot without losing valuable time.
