Packed with processing and resolving power, Sony has stuffed the a7R V's 61MP full-frame sensor and BIONZ XR processor into its beefiest compact yet, the black a7CR Mirrorless Camera, putting professional image quality into a form factor optimised for all-day, everyday carry.

61MP Exmor R CMOS Sensor and BIONZ XR Processor

The Sony a7CR's advanced imaging system is powered by a 61MP Full-Frame Exmor R CMOS sensor and the BIONZ XR processor, a potent combination of incredible resolution with high clarity, low noise, and a wide 15-stop dynamic range. In terms of shooting speeds, the sensor and processor enable up to 8 fps shooting with the mechanical shutter and 7 fps with the electronic shutter at full resolution with full-time AF/AE. If shooting JPEG only, more than 1000 frames can be recorded in a single burst. The sensor's structure promotes impressive image quality, and a copper wiring layer dramatically improves data transmission speed for creating 14-bit, high-resolution 61MP stills with a native sensitivity range from ISO 100-32000, which can be further expanded to ISO 50-102400.

Improved Processing Engine

A new BIONZ XR processing engine offers up to 8x greater processing performance compared to previous generations, which enables faster overall performance, impressive image quality with wide sensitivity and dynamic ranges, and more fluent processing that's capable of handling a bevy of AI tasks and intelligent AF alongside imaging processes. This processing system also reduces rolling shutter and other motion distortions for clean rendering of moving subjects.

Pixel Shift Multi Shooting

This unique compositing mode allows you to achieve even greater resolution than the 61MP sensor affords. Working in conjunction with the sensor-shift image stabilisation, this mode shifts the sensor while making 16 consecutive exposures in order to acquire approximately 240.8MP of information for greater colour accuracy and detail than possible with a single exposure, along with an impressive image size of 19,008 x 12,672-pixels. These files can then be merged together during post-production by using the Sony Imaging software suite.

Accurate Exposure and Colour

The a7CR uses AI-powered algorithms like Human Pose Estimation to detect skin areas for more accurately balance exposures when shooting portraits. This AE method is approximately 20% more reliable, even in backlit or direct sunlight situations, or even when the subject is not directly facing the camera. Deep learning technology, along with external visible light and IR sensors, also contributes to more accurate colour reproduction and auto white balance processing.

Image Stabilisation

Now offering seven stops of shake compensation, the camera's pixel-level 5-axis optical image stabilisation system, which counters five different types of camera shake encountered during handheld shooting of stills and video, is algorithmically optimised for precision detection and control down to a single pixel. The AI Processing Unit also improves communication between the body and the lens, providing more stable framing before shooting. This allows users to confidently use any lens, even adapted lenses, for critical imaging without encountering blur from camera shake.

AI-Powered Autofocus and Subject Recognition

The Sony a7R V combines an advanced AI Processing Unit with Sony's proven Fast Hybrid AF system to deliver highly intelligent subject recognition and tracking performance. Real-time Recognition AF supports a wide range of subjects, including humans, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains, and aircraft. Human detection benefits from AI-based pose estimation that improves Eye AF accuracy and enables the camera to maintain focus even when subjects are partially obscured. Animal and bird recognition has also been significantly enhanced, while specialised modes for insects and vehicles provide reliable tracking of challenging subjects. A dense 693-point phase-detection autofocus system covers up to 79% of the full-frame image area and delivers precise focusing in lighting conditions as low as -4 EV. Features such as Full-time DMF, focus bracketing with up to 299 frames, and Real-time Tracking further expand the camera's capabilities for demanding photographic applications.

Professional Video Features

The a7R V offers advanced video recording capabilities, supporting full-frame 4K recording at up to 60 fps in 10-bit 4:2:2 quality using the XAVC S-I codec. External recording options include 16-bit RAW output via HDMI for maximum post-production flexibility. When using a Super 35 crop, the camera can record oversampled 4K footage from 6.2K capture for enhanced detail and sharpness. Video-focused autofocus tools include Real-time Eye AF for humans, animals, and birds, along with Focus Map, AF Assist, and Focus Breathing Compensation to provide greater control during recording. S-Log3 and S-Gamut3.Cine support more than 15 stops of dynamic range, while S-Cinetone colour science delivers natural skin tones and cinematic highlight rendering. Creative Looks and user-loaded LUTs further enhance creative flexibility both during capture and monitoring.

Refined Design and Connectivity

Designed for efficient operation, the a7R V features a front command dial that provides quicker access to key settings and improved handling during fast-paced shooting. A bright 2.36-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder with a dedicated 120 fps display mode ensures smooth subject tracking, while the fully articulating 3.0-inch touchscreen LCD supports flexible shooting angles and intuitive control. Built-in dual-band Wi-Fi enables rapid image sharing and remote operation, while USB streaming support allows direct connection to a computer for online broadcasts and content creation. Dedicated microphone and headphone ports provide professional audio control, and the camera can be powered or charged via USB for extended shooting sessions. Completing the design is a durable magnesium alloy body with dust and moisture resistance, ensuring dependable performance in challenging environments.

Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM Lens

Pairing an ultra wide-angle focal length with an especially bright design, the FE 14mm f/1.8 GM from Sony is a fast and dynamic lens well-suited to landscape, nature, architectural, and astrophotography applications. Its extremely wide perspective is complemented by an f/1.8 maximum aperture for excellent performance in low-light conditions and its impressively compact form factor makes it a portable and versatile option for everything from casual walkaround shooting to staged architectural shoots.

Exceptional Optical Performance and Low-Light Capability

The Sony FE 14mm f/1.8 GM combines an ultra-wide field of view with the outstanding image quality expected from the G Master series. Its advanced optical design incorporates two XA elements, one aspherical element, one Super ED element, and two ED elements to deliver exceptional sharpness, minimise distortion, and suppress chromatic aberrations across the frame. Nano AR Coating II reduces flare and ghosting for improved contrast and colour accuracy, even when shooting in challenging lighting conditions. The bright f/1.8 maximum aperture makes the lens particularly well suited to astrophotography, nightscapes, and low-light shooting, while specialised optical refinements help minimise sagittal flare for cleaner rendering of stars and point light sources.

Fast Focusing and Compact Professional Design

A dual XD Linear Motor autofocus system provides fast, quiet, and highly precise focusing performance for both still photography and video applications. Internal focusing maintains a consistent lens length during operation while improving responsiveness and handling. The lens can focus as close as 25 cm, enabling dynamic close-up compositions with impressive subject separation and smooth background blur. Despite its ultra-wide perspective and bright aperture, the FE 14mm f/1.8 GM remains remarkably compact and lightweight, weighing approximately 460g. Additional professional features include a de-clickable aperture ring, a programmable focus hold button, comprehensive dust and moisture resistance, fluorine-coated front and rear elements, and a rear filter holder that accommodates cut gel filters for greater creative flexibility.
