FAQs

How does the NiSi Natural Night Filter improve my night photography?

The NiSi Natural Night Filter is specifically designed to block the most common wavelengths of light pollution, such as those emitted by sodium vapour and mercury vapour streetlights. By filtering out these unwanted light sources, the filter enhances contrast and colour accuracy in your night sky images. This means that star trails, Milky Way shots, and other astrophotography can appear clearer and more vibrant, allowing for a more dramatic and detailed depiction of the night sky.

Is the NiSi Natural Night Filter compatible with other lenses?

The NiSi 112mm Natural Night Filter is designed specifically for the Nikon Z 14-24mm f/2.8S lens, which requires a 112mm filter size. While it will not fit directly on other lenses with different filter thread sizes, you may use step-up rings to adapt it to other lenses if they have a compatible diameter. However, for optimal performance in light pollution reduction, it's best to use it with the intended lens.

What are the benefits of the NANO Coating technology on this filter?

The NANO Coating technology used in the NiSi Natural Night Filter provides several advantages. It helps to reduce reflections on the filter's surface, which minimizes ghosting and flare during photography. This is especially important in night photography where contrasting light sources can easily create unwanted artefacts. Additionally, the coating includes a protective layer that repels water, dust, and oil, making it easier to clean and maintain without scratching the filter surface, thus ensuring consistent image quality.

Can I use this filter for daytime photography?

While the NiSi Natural Night Filter is primarily designed for night photography to combat light pollution, it can technically be used during the day. However, it may not provide any significant benefits for daylight shooting and could potentially reduce light transmission, leading to darker images. For daytime photography, it is recommended to use filters designed specifically for that purpose, such as polarising or neutral density filters.

How should I care for and clean the NiSi Natural Night Filter?

To maintain the quality of your NiSi Natural Night Filter, it is important to handle it with care. Always use a lens cloth or microfiber cloth to clean the filter, and avoid using any abrasive materials that could scratch the surface. If the filter is exposed to water, dust, or oil, the NANO Coating makes it easier to wipe clean. For deeper cleaning, you can use a lens cleaning solution specifically designed for optical surfaces, applying it gently with the cloth. Store the filter in a protective case when not in use to prevent damage.

What type of photography is best suited for the NiSi Natural Night Filter?

The NiSi Natural Night Filter is ideal for various types of night photography, including astrophotography, urban night scenes, and landscape photography under low light conditions. It excels in environments where artificial light pollution is prevalent, helping to enhance the visibility of stars, planets, and other celestial bodies. Photographers looking to capture the beauty of the night sky or create dramatic images of cityscapes will find this filter particularly valuable.
