FAQs

What makes the Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO ideal for macro photography?

The Laowa 90mm f/2.8 lens is specifically designed for macro photography with its impressive 2:1 magnification capability. This allows photographers to capture intricate details of tiny subjects, such as insects or flowers, at a life-size scale, providing exceptional clarity and resolution. Additionally, the lens features a minimum focusing distance of just 20.5cm, enabling extreme close-up shots while maintaining sharpness and depth of field.

How does the apochromatic (APO) design improve image quality?

The apochromatic design of the Laowa 90mm lens incorporates three extra-low dispersion glasses, which significantly reduce chromatic aberrations, including both longitudinal and lateral types. This ensures that colours stay true and sharp even at high magnification levels. The APO characteristic also minimises purple fringing and ghosting throughout the aperture range, leading to cleaner and more professional-looking images with less need for extensive post-processing.

Is this lens suitable for portrait photography as well as macro?

Yes, the Laowa 90mm f/2.8 lens is versatile enough for both macro and portrait photography. Its focal length of 90mm provides a flattering perspective for portraits, allowing photographers to capture beautiful bokeh and subject isolation, while still having the ability to switch to macro mode for detailed close-ups. This dual functionality makes it a valuable addition to any photographer's toolkit.

How does the compact size of the Laowa 90mm affect usability?

The compact and lightweight design of the Laowa 90mm f/2.8 lens enhances portability and ease of use, especially for photographers who are often on the move. Weighing only 619g and measuring Ø74 x 120mm, it is significantly smaller than many equivalent macro lenses. This allows for better handling and reduced fatigue during long shooting sessions, making it an excellent choice for outdoor and travel photography.

What type of subjects can I effectively photograph with this lens?

The Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO is highly versatile, allowing you to photograph a wide range of subjects, including small insects, flowers, and detailed textures found in nature. Additionally, it can be used for product photography, fine art, and portraits, giving you the flexibility to explore various styles and genres with one lens, making it an ideal tool for both hobbyists and professionals.

How does the lens perform in different lighting conditions?

The Laowa 90mm f/2.8 lens is designed to perform well in various lighting conditions due to its advanced optical construction. The lens's ability to control aberrations and maintain sharpness across the aperture range allows for consistent image quality even in challenging lighting. However, using a tripod or stabilising equipment is advisable in low light situations to prevent camera shake, especially when working at high magnifications.
