FAQs

What makes the Laowa 85mm f/5.6 2X Ultra Macro APO stand out compared to other macro lenses?

The Laowa 85mm f/5.6 2X Ultra Macro APO is distinguished by its compact size and lightweight design, weighing only 252g, making it the smallest 2x macro lens available for full-frame mirrorless cameras. Its apochromatic design effectively reduces chromatic aberration, ensuring high image quality with minimal post-production work. Additionally, it offers a versatile focusing range from infinity to 2:1 magnification, allowing for both detailed macro photography and beautiful portraits.

How does the apochromatic (APO) characteristic improve image quality?

The apochromatic characteristic of the Laowa 85mm f/5.6 lens significantly reduces chromatic aberration, which can lead to unwanted colour fringing around high-contrast edges in images. By compressing both longitudinal and lateral chromatic aberration, this lens ensures that colours remain true to life, enhancing image clarity and detail. This results in more aesthetically pleasing photographs that require less correction in post-processing.

What types of photography is the Laowa 85mm f/5.6 lens best suited for?

The Laowa 85mm f/5.6 2X Ultra Macro APO is ideal for macro photography due to its 2:1 magnification capability, allowing photographers to capture intricate details of small subjects like insects, flowers, and textures. Additionally, its focal length and optical quality make it suitable for portrait photography, where the lens can produce beautiful, sharp images with a pleasing bokeh effect. Its versatility makes it a valuable tool for photographers looking to explore both macro and portrait styles.

What is the minimum focusing distance, and why is it important?

The minimum focusing distance of the Laowa 85mm f/5.6 lens is 6.4 inches (16.3 cm). This short focusing distance is crucial for macro photography, as it allows photographers to get close to their subjects to capture fine details that would be missed with longer minimum focusing distances. This feature is particularly beneficial when photographing small objects, as it enables a greater level of detail and engagement with the subject.

Can this lens be used for video as well as photography?

Yes, the Laowa 85mm f/5.6 2X Ultra Macro APO is suitable for both photography and videography. Its internal focusing mechanism ensures that the lens length remains consistent during focusing, which is beneficial for video work as it reduces focus breathing. Additionally, the lens's ability to maintain sharpness and contrast throughout its aperture range makes it a solid choice for producing high-quality video content, especially in macro videography.

Is the Laowa 85mm f/5.6 compatible with other camera systems?

The Laowa 85mm f/5.6 lens is specifically designed for Leica L mount cameras. While it is tailored for this system, Laowa also manufactures other lenses with different mounts for various camera brands. If you are using a different camera system, you may want to check for compatibility or consider purchasing a lens adapter, but please note that functionality may vary depending on the adapter used.

How does the lens handle light in macro photography?

The compact size of the Laowa 85mm f/5.6 lens allows more light to reach the subject, which is particularly advantageous in macro photography where lighting can be challenging. The lens's design promotes better light transmission and helps to achieve sharper images with more contrast. Additionally, its ability to focus from infinity down to 2x magnification ensures that photographers can effectively utilise available light in various shooting conditions, resulting in well-exposed images.
