Product Overview

Atomos Ninja Phone Video Co-Processor

The Ninja Phone Video Co-Processor from Atomos is a 10-bit video co-processor for smartphones and tablets that lets you record from professional cameras via HDMI. Designed to take advantage of the iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, and their OLED display, the Ninja Phone lets you encode an HDMI signal to ProRes or H.265. Encoded video is sent via a USB-C output to your iPhone's USB-C input, where its A17 SoC processor decodes the signal and displays it on your iPhone's screen, which features a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and supports Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG. It can also display 11 stops of dynamic range of a peak brightness of 1600 nits. ProRes encoded video may be stored on your iPhone as a .mov file and/or simultaneously transcoded to 10-bit H.265 for workflows that include camera to cloud or live streaming using the iPhone's 5G and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity.

FAQs

What benefits does the Atomos Ninja Phone Video Co-Processor offer for mobile filmmakers?

The Atomos Ninja Phone Video Co-Processor significantly enhances mobile filmmaking by allowing users to record high-quality video from professional cameras via HDMI. It supports 10-bit video encoding to ProRes or H.265, ensuring superior image quality and flexibility in post-production. With its compatibility with the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, filmmakers can benefit from advanced display capabilities, including Dolby Vision and HDR support, which dramatically improves the visual output. The ability to capture footage in both 16:9 and 9:16 formats also caters to various content creation needs, from traditional video to vertical formats for social media.

How does the Ninja Phone app enhance the user experience?

The Ninja Phone app is designed to provide seamless control over the co-processor and the iPhone. It allows users to manage settings, monitor recording status, and select between different capture formats easily. The app's user-friendly interface ensures that creators can quickly adapt their workflow, whether they are shooting for YouTube or Instagram. Additionally, the app is compatible with iOS and iPadOS, making it versatile for a range of devices, and it simplifies the integration of other accessories, enhancing overall production capabilities.

Can I use external accessories with the Atomos Ninja Phone, and how does that work?

Yes, the Atomos Ninja Phone Video Co-Processor includes a dedicated USB-C accessory port that allows you to connect external microphones and other third-party accessories. This feature is particularly beneficial for content creators who require enhanced audio quality or additional equipment for their shoots. The separate port helps maintain the integrity of the video connection while providing the flexibility to incorporate essential tools, ensuring a comprehensive production setup.

What types of power sources can I use with the Ninja Phone, and how does charging work?

The Ninja Phone can be powered using NP series batteries, a battery eliminator, or a USB-C 5V/3A input. When connected to one of these power sources, it not only powers the device but also charges your iPhone and any attached accessories. This feature is crucial for extended shooting sessions, as it allows for longer operational times without the concern of running out of battery, making it ideal for on-the-go production.

What is the significance of 10-bit video encoding in my projects?

10-bit video encoding is significant because it allows for a much broader range of colours and finer gradations in tone compared to 8-bit video. This results in smoother colour transitions and more accurate representation of scenes, especially in high dynamic range (HDR) content. For filmmakers and video creators, this means greater flexibility in colour grading during post-production, leading to more cinematic results and higher quality output for professional projects.

Is the Ninja Phone compatible with other smartphone models outside of the iPhone 15 series?

The Atomos Ninja Phone Video Co-Processor is specifically designed to leverage the advanced capabilities of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. While it may work with other devices that support HDMI input, full compatibility and performance optimisations are best realised with the specified models. Users should check for compatibility with their specific smartphone or tablet model to ensure optimal functionality.
