Sony FE 24mm f/2.8 G Lens

Sony has just announced not one, not two, but three new compact prime lenses fulfilling the 'Lens Trilogy'. Sony has certainly been very busy lately with the recent launch of the 35mm and FE 50mm F1.2 GM lenses and the recently announced Sony Alpha 1. The new G Lens Trilogy includes a FE 24mm f/2.8 G, FE 40mm f/2.5 G and FE 50mm f/2.5 G. If you're a Sony prime shooter and were hoping for a smaller and more compact kit, Sony has just answered your prayers.

These new Sony lenses have the same dimensions and are all within a few grams of weight from each other. With superb and surprising features, these G lenses are not throw away kit options. Designed to support Sony's blistering fast autofocus performance and image quality, the G lens options are a welcome addition to the Sony stable.

What Is The Build Quality Like?

Each of the three Sony lenses features solid construction with surprising features both inside and out. It is especially surprising in a group of lenses that are only Φ68 x 45mm and weigh 162g, 173g and 174g. Even with all three of the new G Lens Trilogy offerings, your kit will be only 500g but whatever stellar Sony Alpha body you prefer.

The 24mm f/2.8 G, 40mm f/2.5 G and 50mm f/2.5 G all share the same durable build quality ideal for any photography or videography application. The construction of each of the lens barrels and hoods contain high-quality aluminium to maintain lightness. In true Sony fashion, all markings on the lens trilogy are both etched and clearly marked for ease of control.

The aperture ring has a great level of travel with nice clicking action - you can even turn this function off for video applications. The focus ring is ridged and glides, with just the right amount of resistance. What's more, each of the three lenses features a Focus Mode Switch and Focus Hold Button for optimal performance in either Autofocus or Manual.

What's more, thanks to the G lens trilogy's consistent dimensions, the same 49mm filter thread is present on each lens. As a result, changing filters is seamless between each of the lenses. Finally, the lenses are dust and moisture-sealed to withstand most conditions.

Is The Autofocus Performance Good On The New Sony Lenses?

True to Sony's industry-leading performance in autofocus, the new G lens trilogy delivers fast and accurate focus. The 24mm f/2.8 G, 40mm f/2.5 G and 50mm f/2.5 G are each supported by a pair of linear motors. What's more, these motors ensure precision performance in autofocus tracking modes as delivered by Sony's stunning Alpha cameras.

For videographers wishing to use compact primes, the G lenses feature Linear Response MF for precise control. The two linear motors operate in near silence and with no vibration - making them perfect for video recording where audio is critical. Plus, by de-clicking the aperture ring, you have the perfect lens trio for your next video project.

How Do The Sony Lenses Fair For Image Quality?

Thanks to the grouping of lens elements and the use of an Extra-low Dispersion element in each lens, image quality is superb. Plus, thanks to the precision build and grouping of aspherical elements, all common forms of aberration have been corrected. Plus, the Sony lens trilogy eliminates chromatic aberration and fringing due to the ED element's placement.

As a result, Sony G lenses deliver outstanding image quality in all conditions. The fast apertures of F2.5 and F2.8 ensure optimal light and subject separation with gorgeous blur and bokeh. These new lenses from Sony will delight with stunning images and crystal clear video recording every time.

3 New Sony Lenses For You To Choose From

Sony is putting others to shame with their constant camera and lens releases. While it is not unusual to see a manufacturer release lenses at this time of year, it is interesting to see three Sony lenses released simultaneously. However you look at it, Sony is telling the world they are here for photographers and videographers. So, with a constantly growing range, there's bound to be a lens to suit you.

All three lenses were designed without the heavy price tag. Each has its own use case. The 24mm f/2.8 G Lens will appeal to landscape and travel photographers, whereas the 40mm f/2.5 G and 50mm f/2.5 G lens will be well suited for portraiture work.
