Nikon Z9 Development Announcement

While not quite a launch announcement, Nikon has announced that the Nikon Z9 is in development. The all-new Nikon Z mount flagship digital mirrorless camera is set for a 2021 launch. What's more, it represents a giant leap forward in full-frame mirrorless technology. Those who have stuck with the Nikon brand over the decades and those who have embraced Nikon's move to mirrorless - the wait is finally over. The Nikon Z9 delivers the last tech while holding to its heritage.

What Are We Looking At Here?

Based on the single image we have seen of the Nikon Z9, it is a beast. The Z9 takes on the larger format and size of a Nikon D6 DSLR. But with the style and grace of the Nikon Z7 II. Rather than a separate battery grip, it is a single unit with a grip for horizontal and portrait orientation. Key function buttons and dials appear on the vertical grip that seems just as deep and comfortable as the horizontal one. As seen with the Nikon Z7 II, a single (but larger) command dial sits atop the camera.

Who Is The Nikon Z9 For?

As this is just a development announcement, there is not much information available - just the highlights from Nikon. We know that this is a serious pro-grade full-frame mirrorless camera targeted at working professionals. It is interesting to note that Sony has only recently announced the Sony a1 - a premium flagship body also targeted at pros. It appears that Nikon has just fired a shot across Sony's bow to issue a challenge. If you love the Nikon Z mount series, or are considering jumping ship from your existing brand, keep a close eye on this battle.

The Best Optics For The Nikon Z9

Anyone who's been following the Nikon Z Mount's recent development will know Nikon represents a clear and present danger to the mirrorless market. The original Nikon Z6 and Z7 digital mirrorless cameras demonstrated to the market that Nikon had finally seen the light. They further strengthened their position with the recent releases of the stellar Nikon Z6 II and Z7 II

But the good times don't stop there. Nikon has fully supported the Z Mount line-up with no less than nine native zoom lenses covering a comprehensive range. The Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 S has received high acclaim for its performance and precision optics. Nikon has seven lenses currently available for prime shooters, including the new Nikon 50mm f/1.2 fast prime. It's worth mentioning that there are more on the way with several prime and zoom lenses in the 2021 road map. Two of which are telephoto zooms with an astonishing range.

What We Do and Don't Know About The Nikon Z9

The Nikon Z9 Development Announcement is more of a teaser or promo of the big event. More like a 'Save The Date' verses and actual wedding invitation. As a result, information on performance, features and specs are scant. We know that the Nikon Z9 is due to launch sometime in 2021 - less than nine months to wait. While there are rumours aplenty, here is what Nikon has officially announced.

Nikon Z9 is a full-frame, Nikon FX-format mirrorless camera drawn from the previous Z mount cameras' fantastic tech. The Z9 utilises an all-new FX-format stacked CMOS sensor and a wholly revamped image processing engine. Nikon also has their eye on videographers at all levels as they state the Nikon Z9 supports 8K video recording. As far as groundbreaking technology and unprecedented specs go - that's all we know for now.

We don't know the quality and megapixels of the stacked CMOS sensor nor the performance of the new processor. Rumours claim that the development of the Nikon Z9 saw tests with sensors ranging from 45-60 megapixels. They also claim that it will shoot continuously up to 20fps - but rumours are never to be trusted. If you are frustrated about the lack of info like we are, don't forget this is just a development announcement. As soon as more information comes to hand, we will provide updates.

Final Thoughts on the Nikon Z9

While we do not know much about the Nikon Z9, we know that all eyes will be on this new full-frame mirrorless. There are even rumours that it will appear at the Tokyo Olympics - should they ever go ahead. Regardless, Nikon believes that the Nikon Z9 is the embodiment of professional and usable camera-technology that exceeds everything to date. That's a bold statement, but we are willing to bet that the Nikon Z9 will knock our socks off. Don't delay - the Nikon Z9 is available for pre-order now at Georges Cameras, so be sure to secure your copy. What's more, the full range of Nikon native Z-mount lenses is in-store and online.
