Overview

Sony A7R IV Ultimate Travel Photography Kit

Sony a7R IV Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only)

We got our hands on Sonys most surprisingly announcement this year the Sony A7R IV (we really thought it would be the a7sIII!). The Sony A7R IV houses the most PACKED MP sensor on the full-frame market right now, with a whopping 61 megapixels. In addition, Sony has improved the autofocus capabilities in the Sony A7R IV allowing you now to use continuous eye AF in photo and video.

Key Features:

61MP Full-Frame Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor

BIONZ X Image Processor & Front-End LSI

567-Point Phase-Detection AF System

UHD 4K30p Video with HLG & S-Log3 Gammas

Ergonomics and handling

The biggest difference of the a7R IV compared to the III and the rest of the a7 series is the deep grip. Holding the Sony a7R IV is super comfortable and a warm welcome for those with bigger hands. In addition the side doors on the Sony a7R IV have been redesigned making it easier to access your ports. A part from these changes the button layout and overall construction of the body is basically identical to the Sony a7RIII.

Performance

The biggest performance boost for the Sony a7RIV is the improvement in autofocus. With a revamped autofocus system, the a7rIV is great for tracking, and general usage. In addition can use continuous eye AF in both stills and video.

The image sensor on the Sony a7RIV is incredible, boasting a large 61MP. Images preserve a high amount of detail and resolution which can be manipulated by a large amount in post. View our image samples in our video below.

Conclusion

Is the Sony a7RIV a worthy upgrade from the a7RIII? It may not be the biggest upgrade on paper, however, the new sensor, ergonomics and flashier AF system do make it justifiable. We had a great time using this camera and will be a popular one for the years to come.

Sony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 GM Lens

Comprising a range of ultra-wide fields of view, theSony FE 12-24mm f/2.8 GMis a bright and versatile zoom characterized by its broad range and bright design. Featuring a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture, this lens is ideal for working in available lighting conditions and controlling depth of field to isolate subject matter. Its advanced optical design includes a series of XA, aspherical, Super ED, and ED elements, which combine to reduce a variety of aberrations and distortions for a high degree of sharpness, accurate rendering, and notable colour accuracy. An updated Nano AR Coating II has also been applied, which suppresses flare and ghosting for greater contrast when working in bright and backlit conditions.

Complementing the optics is an XD Linear Motor system that uses four separate focusing motors to deliver especially quiet, precise, and quick autofocus performance. A floating focus design is employed, too, that aids in maintaining consistent results throughout the focusing range, from 11" to infinity. The lens also sports a dust- and moisture-sealed design and fluorine-coated front lens element to support shooting in inclement conditions and there is a built-in petal-shaped lens hood to block stray light and physically protect the front element.

Features:

As part of Sony's esteemed G Master series, this lens is designed to achieve notably high resolution and sharpness through the correction of a wide variety of spherical and chromatic aberrations. Additionally, these lenses feature robust and intuitive-to-handle physical designs to benefit both photography and cine applications.

Versatile ultra-wide-angle zoom is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however, can also be used on APS-C models where it provides an 18-36mm equivalent focal length.

Bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also affords increased control over depth of field.

Three XA (extreme aspherical) elements, and one standard aspherical element, are incorporated into the optical design, which features superior surface precision for effective control over astigmatism, field curvature, coma, distortion and other spherical aberrations for a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.

Two Super ED elements and three extra-low dispersion elements are featured in the lens design and help to reduce chromatic aberrations and colour fringing for improved clarity and colour neutrality.

Nano AR Coating II has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions. This updated coating is better suited for larger, curved elements and is especially adept at minimizing internal reflections.

Floating focusing system divides the focus group into two separately controlled groups and helps to maintain consistently clear optical performance throughout the zoom and focus ranges.

An XD Linear Motor system uses four separate motors—two per focusing group—along with an internal focusing design to provide quick, quiet, and precise autofocus and tracking performance. This design also contributes to more natural, intuitive Linear Response manual focus control and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting.

A focus hold button is present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.

Minimum focusing distance of 11" is available throughout the zoom range.

Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.

Fluorine-coated front element resists dust, moisture, and fingerprints and is easy to clean.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing shallow depth of field techniques.

An integrated petal-shaped lens hood helps to block stray light from causing lens flare and also affords some physical protection to the front element.

The filter holder is incorporated at the rear of the lens, within the lens mount, and accepts cut gel filters and a filter cutting template is included.

Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM Lens

A new dimension of portrait performance

Designed and built to the strictest precision standards, this lens offers magnificent imaging performance throughout the frame, right up to its widest F1.4 aperture setting.

Extraordinary detail and bokeh in one lens

An XA (extreme aspherical) element with 0.01 micron surface precision contributes to previously unachievable resolution and stunning bokeh for new expressive potential.

Natural images without spurious colour

Three ED glass elements support the lens’s outstanding resolving power by suppressing chromatic aberration and minimizing artificial colouration throughout its aperture range.

Sublime 2-sensor autofocus accuracy

Two-position sensors enhance the accuracy of an SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) drive system for autofocus performance that fully supports the lens’s high-resolution capability.

Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Lens

For a lot of sports/wildlife photographers Sony hasn’t been the best system in previous years with it’s lack of range in good telephoto lenses. However last year Sony released this gem the FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 MASTER lens which was the first step for Sony to show everyone that they’re serious about getting their gear into the hands of professionals. So here are out thoughts.

Aesthetic and Construction

Immediately when you pick the FE Sony 100-400mm MASTER lens you will notice that it has a compact form factor. It feels like you’re holding something the size of a 70-200mm. It’s constructed out of a reinforced plastic that feels super light, which for this many optics/elements is incredible. For some people they may be turned away with the feeling of the lens as its competitors have a more solid feeling construction, which is more attractive to people who are on the field.

The switches are super tactile and feel premium. On the side, there is a resistance wheel which you can turn to make zooming through the focal length really smooth or tight. A note, if you do leave it at it’s smoothest the lens, will slowly creep out as you move. The focus/zoom rings are nice and wide and feel amazing.

Two nifty features that they’ve implemented into the construction:

Lens hood with filter door: For those who use NDs and Circular Polarizers you can leave the lens hood on and flick the door back and adjust the strength of the filter.

The tripod foot is easily the best tripod foot we’ve ever encountered. It doesn’t jiggle and you can easily take it off with its slide/lock construction.

Performance

It was a joy to use. It is super responsive, as soon as you put your finger on the shutter button. It will track and accurately focus on subjects no matter where you are in your focal length. The only thing to really note on is its the depth of field and lighting performance. Being a variable aperture lens at 400mm your maximum aperture is only F5.6. For sports photographers who need shallow depth of field to clearly separate a player from the field, at F5.6 you do not really get that pop. In addition, we noticed that to get the sharpest out of the lens throughout the whole focal length, you needed to stop down by at least one stop.

The two-mode optical image stabilisation combined with the amazing Sony IBIS was a dream. It felt like the image was super still which made it really easy to shoot sharp photos at long focal lengths and video capture that little bit easier. Where this lens is attractive is that it has a versatile telephoto l focal length which you can use for nice compressed landscapes and tight portraits of animals from metres aways.

Image Quality

One amazing thing with this lens is that the images are super sharp from the centre to the corners. It didn’t matter which focal length we were shooting at the images came out with great contrast, clarity and sharpness. We shot these photos using an A7R II.

Final Thoughts

The Sony FE 100-400mm MASTER is a great lens. It comes at a premium price tag like the rest of it’s family. Although the DOF performance and construction isn’t perfect, the image quality, speed and overall performance are fantastic. If you’re looking for a versatile super-telephoto lens that can be used for sports, wildlife, portraiture, landscapes but is light enough to travel with you everywhere; this is the lens to go for.

The first super-telephoto zoom in Sony’s flagship G Master series covers a versatile 100 mm to 400 mm range. With extraordinary resolution and fast, precise autofocus it lets you capture distant action with outstanding quality and immediacy. In addition to world-class image quality, this fine lens offers the mobility, reliability, and operability that professional applications demand.

This top-performance G Master zoom lens covers a broad 100 mm to 400 mm focal length range that is ideal for sports, wildlife, and other subjects that require a long reach. It offers image quality and AF performance that will support professional fieldwork, tracking and capturing even fast-moving subjects with outstanding resolution and clarity.

The optimal combination of double linear motor and DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) drive systems is the first of its kind. It also implements precision sensors that provide real-time feedback for extremely high positioning accuracy, allowing the body’s AF system to perform at its best.

A precision optical design ensures consistently high corner-to-corner resolution at any focusing distance throughout the lens’s zoom range. The SEL100400GM not only delivers stunning images of distant subjects at super-telephoto focal lengths; it offers equally high performance when shooting nearby subjects as well.

Sony’s Nano AR Coating suppresses spurious reflections that can cause flare and ghosting in backlit and other challenging lighting situations, for consistently high contrast and clarity. Reduced flare, particularly when shooting in bright outdoor conditions, means greater framing and composing flexibility. (1. Nano AR coating / 2. Glass / 3. Transmitted light)

This is the first α lens to include a zoom smoothness adjuster that provides mechanical control of zoom ring torque. Set a lower torque for fast zooming, or increase torque when slow, stable zooming is required. Fine adjustment allows the feel of the lens to be matched to individual user needs.

Magnesium alloy components and other refinements contribute to high durability as well as the class-leading size and weight reductions that not only mean greater mobility but improved manageability with lightweight bodies for easier, more stable handheld shooting.

Floating focus and high positioning precision have made it possible to achieve a minimum focus distance of just 3.22 feet (0.98 meters) with up to 0.35x magnification. You have a versatile 100 mm to 400 mm super-telephoto zoom range, plus an outstanding close-up performance at 100 mm.

Conveniently located focus hold buttons provide focus hold control even during continuous AF operation. They can also be customized from a camera menu that allows them to be assigned to a variety of different functions.
