Fujifilm GFX100 Highest Class Resolution Mirrorless Digital Camera
Fujifilm is proud to officially announce the launch of our most premium camera yet - the GFX100 mirrorless camera, which features the world’s first 102 megapixel 55mm diagonal length large format sensor. The new camera will be the flagship model of the GFX system, which has always been designed with professional photographers and enthusiasts in mind.
The GFX100 features a back illuminated sensor with phase detection pixels - a first of its kind for sensors larger than 35mm full frame format. AF speed is up to 2x as fast as previous GFX models, and offers tracking AF on moving subjects, as well as more accurate continuous AF.
Building on its innovations, the GFX100 introduces another world-first feature for sensors larger than 35mm - in-body image stabilisations (IBIS). IBIS delivers five-axis image stabilisation of up to 5.5 stops. This means ultra high resolution photography can be achieved, even when shooting handheld.
Going beyond photography, the GFX100 offers the world’s first mirrorless camera with a sensor of its size, providing 4k 30p video recording capability (10bit 4:2:2). This marks the third world-first feature of the camera, emphasising its unparalleled innovation and versatility.
Key features include:
a) Brand new 102MP approximately 55mmLF diagonal length large format image sensor
- The new sensor measures approx. 55mm diagonally and boasts an effective pixel count of approximately 102 million. When combined with the fourth generation X-Processor 4, it delivers a very high level of image quality with exceptional colour reproduction unique to Fujifilm.
- The sensor has 3.76 million phase detection pixels across the surface, offering approximately 100% coverage and enabling fast and accurate AF regardless of whether a subject is within the frame.
- The sensor’s back illuminated structures allows for greater amount of light to enter while achieving better noise performance. The sensor has lower noise, greater dynamic range and faster readout despite the higher pixel count.
b) The world’s first five-axis IBIS in sensors larger than the 35mm format
- To avoid a decrease in image quality from camera shake caused by a large pixel count, Fujifilm has designed an IBIS system specifically for the unique sensor.
- The IBIS system offers 5.5 stops of image stabilisation (with the GF63mmF2.8 R WR)
The IBIS sensor shift mechanism ensures images are stabilised not only against pitch and yaw movements, but also against shift and roll movements. - The entire shutter unit is suspended using four springs to minimise the effect of shutter shock. This significantly broadens the scope of situations where you can shoot handheld with the GFX100 and still enjoy exceptionally high resolution.
c) The world’s first 4K 30p video capability in sensors larger than 35mm
- The GFX100 records 4K 30p video (10bit 4:2:2 externally and 10bit 4:2:0 internally) - a world’s first among large-format mirrorless cameras with sensors of its size.
- The GFX100 records video with a sensor area measuring 43.8mm (W) x 23.19mm (H) and 49.56mm diagonally when using a standard digital cinema format of 17:9. This makes it easier than ever to shoot high quality video with shallow depth of field, wide tonal range and high ISO sensitivity.
- The GFX100 uses oversampling with data equivalent to approx. 50.5 megapixels to render video. It also supports the highly efficient H.265/HEVC codec, as well as “F-Log” which has a gamma curve with a wide dynamic range and the “Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG)” for recording HDR footage with ease. The GFX100 is also the first model in the GFX System to incorporate the “ETERNA” cinema film situation mode.
d) Resistant, lightweight and robust magnesium alloy body with integrated vertical grip
- Despite its large sensor, which is 1.7x larger than a 35mm full frame sensor, the GFX100’s body is equivalent to that of a flagship 35mm full frame DSLR in terms of dimensions , and weight .
- The GFX100 is the first Fujifilm mirrorless digital camera to incorporate an integrated vertical grip. This has led to a thinner form factor which is comfortable to hold, despite accommodating IBIS and two batteries in the body.
- In order to maximise the capabilities of the 102MP image sensor, the GFX100’s “core imaging unit” which consists of the lens mount, image stabilisation mechanism and image sensor is isolated from the main panels as much as possible. This double structure design ensures a high level of precision and robustness while minimising any loss in image quality caused by external stress to the body.
- Weather sealing is applied to 95 locations on the body, achieving an advanced level of dust and moisture resistance, and reliability in the toughest conditions.
e) Enhanced operability and versatile information displays
- The GFX100 features a 1.8 inch sub LCD monitor on its top panel, and a 2.05 inch sub monitor on its rear panel. The panels display EXIF data, histogram and camera settings in large text, with users able to allocate different information across the monitors, making the viewfinder easier to use.
- For users who prefer dial based operations, much like older GFX models, the GFX100 has a “Virtual Dial Mode”, which displays a dial on the top panel which can be rotated and adjusted with the Command Dials.
- Buttons and levers have been minimised for ease of use. On the left shoulder of the camera is the Drive Mode Dial, enabling instant switchover between Still Image, Video and Multiple Exposure modes. Camera settings can be stored for each of the modes for both stills and videos, and only require a single dial movement to recall.
f) 5.76 million dot EVF with 100% coverage and 2.36 million dot tilting 3.2-inch LCD display
- Like the GFX50S, the GFX100 sports the detachable EVF system which can be adjusted using the EVF Tilting Adapter EVF-TL1. The world’s highest resolution 5.76 million dot OLED panel has been used to develop the EVF unit. The viewfinder has specifically been designed for the 102MP sensor, and has a magnification of 0.86x and contains five optical glass elements including aspherical elements.
- The EVF can be set to the “Frame Rate Priority”, “Resolution Priority” or “AF Speed Priority” mode according to subject characteristics and need of the photographer.
- The rear panel monitor uses a 3.2 inch and 2.36 million dot touchscreen LCD which can be tilted in three directions.
g) High speed and high precision phase detection AF
- The phase detection AF algorithm, a first feature for the GFX system, makes full use of 3.76 million phase detection pixels across the entire sensor. This sets a new standard in AF speed and precision for large format cameras performing Single Point, Zone and Wide Tracking AF. When using a prime lens with a heavy set of focus lens elements, the GFX100 achieves a speed improvement of up to 210% over a regular AF system.
- The GFX100 boasts dramatic improvement in the accuracy of Face and Eye Detection AF, which is an essential function for fashion and portrait photographers. Face Detection now works at a greater shooting distance, and shows significant improvement in tracking the side profile of a person or when a person moves erratically in the frame. It also maintains focus of subjects behind obstacles.
h) Unique colour reproduction technology delivering astonishing quality in stills
- The combination of the sensor and fourth generation “X-Processor 4” processing engine means the camera also supports “16-bit RAW” mode.
- The GFX100 also enables 16-bit TIFF in camera file conversion. The ultra high 100MP+ resolution alongside rich colour and tonal reproduction found in the “Film Simulation” modes boosts data’s post processing tolerance.
- It also features a “Smooth Skin Effect” function. This automatically smooths skin tones - a function often performed in post processing when shooting portraiture.
i) Additional functions and features
- The GFX100 can accommodate two NP-T125 batteries, extending the number of frames per charge to approximately 800 when the rear LCD is used.
- The camera can be powered and charged through a USB-C connection, enabling longer continuous shooting and simultaneous charging of the two batteries in the camera.
- This is the first GFX Series model that supports IEEE802.11ac 5GHz, enabling even faster wireless image transfer.
- Compatible with “Tether Shooting Plug-in PRO for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom” and “Capture One Pro Fujifilm” for RAW processing and tethered shooting.
