Aesthetic and Construction

There is a lot to talk about the design here and we’ll split it up into two sections.

The things we liked

  1. The bottom of the Ronin S has two screw threads on the battery/grip. One is a 1/4 inch and one is a 3/8 so you don’t have to use an adapter (which is brilliant)
  2. The battery/grip is completely rubberised so if you have sweaty hands or want to use the Ronin-S for a long period of time, you will be confident that it won’t just slip out of your hands.
  3. The control panel is fantastic. The buttons for the mode dial and the record button feel responsive and tactile. The trigger at the front of the Ronin S allows you to do a few things. Firstly you can lock the gimbal by holding it, double tapping it will return the camera to the home position and lastly tapping three times will flip it 180 degrees for selfie mode. Trigger feels good as well. Lastly the thumb joystick is definitely best in it’s class. It feels like a more responsive version of the joysticks on the DJI Mavic Pro Controller.
  4. It has a modular design which allows you to seperate the handle from the gimbal motors. Meaning later on you’ll be able to mount the gimbal motors externally onto other mediums.
  5. The motors are fantastic. Overall the gimbal construction is of high quality but the motors they feel solid. We definitely felt confident using it and it being able to take the weight of anything we threw at it. Lastly the offset roll motor is amazing because if your camera doesn’t have an articulating screen, you can finally see the screen!

The things we didn’t quite like

  1. The locking mechanism. By far one of the biggest issues of the Ronin S and that is the locking mechanism that is used to hold the battery grip and the gimbal motor together. There isn’t a second button to reinforce the locking mechanism so if you do end up flicking the switch by accident your gimbal will fall off. This is more of a problem if you decide to move your focus wheel onto the other side if you’re left handed.
  2. The quick release plate system on the Ronin-S does not take Manfrotto 501 PL plates. However the DJI supplied plate will work in Manfrotto 500 series fluid heads.
  3. Charging the Ronin-S is a bit funny. The battery grip physically does not have a port on it for you to plug it in to charge. You have to slot the gimbal motors onto the grip to charge it with the USB-C port. For people who are going to buy extra grips this may be a problem as they would have to switch it out every time to charge. We are assuming theres going to be some sort of dock for you to charge all the grips on at once.
  4. It’s very heavy. It weighs about 1.86KG which means using it for a long period of time it may be a bit difficult.

Nothing to complain on this part. The performance of the gimbal is second to none and definitely best in it’s class. As we said before we had high confidence in the motors. The gimbal is buttery smooth and really for it’s price point you can’t get anything like it. The motors when engaged are solid and holds the camera still and is extremely forgiven if you are making harsh jerky movements. For someone that has never used a gimbal before and hasn’t quite learnt it’s form and technique then the Ronin S is the perfect gimbal.

The Ronin-S can be operated up to 75 KPH and when we tested it on our skateboards/sprinting it really held up to speed (even though in fairness it was max 20 KPH). The battery life is phenomenal, DJI have rated it up to 12 hours and we believe that. We used it for a solid 3 hours and it barely went down in percentage. Lastly the DJI Ronin app is brilliant and it works well. For those who like the time lapse functionality the DJI Ronin app is brilliant for it. It’s super simple to use and it just works well.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion apart from a couple of questionable design choices the DJI Ronin S is easily the best gimbal stabiliser in its price point. Just costing over $1000 AUD, the Ronin S is packed filled with amazing features, and high end performance that would expect from a high end Ronin. For beginners, enthusiasts and professionals the DJI Ronin S is by far the easiest gimbal to use and the high performance makes it very forgiving to use. With the weight of the gimbal we would recommend smashing that gym membership to get those arms and shoulders strong, because the Ronin-S is worth every gram.

  • Accessory Dock

DJI Ronin-S Three Axis Gimbal Stabilizer

The DJI Ronin-S is more than just a miniaturized version of the larger Ronin gimbal stabilizers; it represents a scalable ecosystem for integrating DSLR and mirrorless cameras into professional-grade workflows. The single-handed form factor of the Ronin-S lends itself to lighter cameras. But don't let its size fool you; the Ronin-S has a lot going on under the hood. Separate modules are available for the handle and accessory docks, allowing you to customize the gimbal based on how you wish to operate it.

Offset Roll Motor

By offsetting the roll motor, the Ronin-S holds the camera above the roll axis, leaving the camera's LCD screen unblocked. This design also minimizes the camera shake that occurs when transitioning from upright to underslung modes and vice versa.

Customize the response of the Ronin-S to fit your shooting style. Two response types can be saved and instantly recalled with a single click. Go from smooth camera movement to rapid response with the flick of a switch to be ready for any kind of shooting situation.

Modular Design

The Ronin-S was built to be modular. Direct-connected and wireless accessories are supported. For example, separately available DJI control devices, such as the Master Wheels and Master Force, enhance the usability of the Ronin-S in professional scenarios.
