Shop The Right Type Of Wind Protection For Clear Audio Quality.

Wind noises are a nightmare for any audio technician recording videos outdoors. Sudden air currents or a continuous breeze might overwhelm the dialogue clarity. To achieve professional-level sound quality, you require windscreens and other instruments to protect the microphone.

While shooting outdoors, even the most expensive and high-quality microphones are affected by wind disturbances. Multiple forms of windscreens meet different needs, but the basic principle remains the same.

Wind protection keeps the air away from the mic capsules. Several layers, such as mic covers and muffs, cut out the sound of wind completely. Windscreens have various acoustic properties with different transparencies. However, thicker or denser fabric with fewer pores in its texture will attenuate higher frequencies.

Types of Windscreens

Foam Windscreens

Foam Wind shelters are ideal for indoor use. The air movement inside a room is less than 1 meter per second. These screens provide noise protection up to 15-20 dB and minimise the loss of high frequencies. Foam screens are usually made up of open-cell material like polyurethane.

Windjammers

Windjammers are a combination of foam and fur. The synthetic fur acts as the outer protective layer to the foam. It aims to provide better dispersion in air movements around the capsule.

Baskets/Blimps

Blimps are the plastic mesh wrapped around the thin layer of foam. Also known as baskets, they are pill-shaped cases that provide an open chamber. The chamber increases the distance between the mic capsule and moving air. The blimps can reduce up to 50 dB of wind noise at a speed that is more than 6 meters per second.

Georges Offers A Wide Collection Of Wind Protection

A microphone should always have wind protection irrespective of the location. The sound operator must be aware of the surroundings and what type of wind protection is necessary.
